EVOLVE Artist FAQ

  • What is Evolve Images?
We are a stock licensing agency focused on offering the highest quality commercial stock images produced by the world’s most talented photographers.
  • What makes you different?
Our mission is to curate the world’s images. Our team of experts, who have been responsible for building the industry’s most successful and innovative stock agency brands, including Getty Images, PhotoDisc, Corbis and Comstock, select only the best available images based on market demand, relevance, creativity, uniqueness and voice.
  • What are the advantages offered to Artists?
Evolve believes creators should be compensated fairly for their work. Each time an image is licensed, the creator will receive a 50% royalty calculated against the gross image license fee. For images that Evolve represents exclusively the royalty rate is 65% to the creator. There are no hosting, slotting, subscription or upload fees. Also, since we license by usage and not resolution we will secure fees that reflect the value of your work.
  • What will make buyers come to Evolve?
We believe less is more. By showcasing and celebrating only the world’s best images, discerning buyers will recognize Evolve as a “must see” destination when sourcing images for their projects.
  • Are you selling images Royalty Free or Rights Managed or both? Can I choose the licensing model?
Neither. We are introducing a new licensing mode: EvoRights. Think of it as a simplified Rights Managed licensing model, but one where the buyer can complete a transaction in just three clicks. With EvoRights, we record all pertinent usage information to ensure accurate licensing. Buyers license images on a non-exclusive, non-perpetual basis for either commercial or editorial rights for a one year term. Longer terms are also available and premiums are charged for placement rights (i.e cover/homepage placement v. interior/secondary). Exclusive rights, after clearing with our contributors, will also be available.
  • What subjects are you in need of?
While subject matter is important, if you have images that are shot creatively and communicate concepts, ideas, or emotions, then we’d love to see your work. Some of the concepts that generate significant demand from buyers include: Achievement, Competition, Stress, Fear, Innocence, Honor, Trust, Loyalty, Responsibility, Stability, Courage, Role Reversal, Freedom, Strength, Mystery, Heaven, Tradition, Security and Values. Of course, all your images must be model and/or property released for commercial advertising uses.
  • What are your technical requirements for initial submissions?
In general we prefer you submit low-res .jpg files of approximately 1000 pixels on the long side. With the proliferation of advertising and editorial products distributed through online, mobile and other electronic devices, we are not constrained by file size alone and we invite you to submit images captured on camera phones, stills edited from digital video capture, consumer-level digital cameras, etc.
  • What are your technical requirements for selected images?
For selected images we prefer you upload highest-quality .jpg files at the maximum available resolution. For selected images captured on camera phones, stills edited from digital video capture, consumer-level digital cameras, etc. please upload the original source file, or in the case of modified images the largest non-upsized file you have, minimum of 3 megapixels.
  • Do you require releases for all images?
If a selected image includes a recognizable person or private property, you will be asked to upload an electronic copy of the release(s) along with the selected image.
  • What rights to my images am I giving you and what rights do I keep?
The contributor agreement grants Evolve Images the right to distribute and license your image(s) worldwide. We offer both exclusive and non-exclusive image distribution.
  • What is the royalty split?
Contributors receive a 65% royalty for exclusive images; 50% for non-exclusive images.
  • What is the duration of the contract?
We offer contributors two options: image exclusive distribution for one (1) year or non-exclusive image distribution for three (3) years. All agreements auto-renew at the end of the term unless you notify us 90 days prior that you do not wish to extend the agreement.
  • Can I see a copy of your contract?
Yes. The Artist agreement is available on our Submissions Guidelines page.
  • Can I make amendments to the contract?
No. The Artist agreement we offer has been adopted from the industry standard developed and used by the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA).
  • What information do you need from me to sign up?
You can submit images for review at any time. We will then notify you which images we would like to represent. Before we can accept selected images for representation, you will need to agree to the terms and conditions of our Artist agreement.
  • What if I want to withdraw an image from the Evolve collection after it’s been accepted?
You can request that an image be withdrawn from the available online catalog at any time. However, we reserve the right to license an image to any registered clients who may have previously downloaded a comp version of the image less than one year before it was removed for a period of up to one (1) year.
  • Are there any deductions?
Royalties are calculated on the gross license amount. Eg: When Evolve licenses a non-exclusive image for $1000, your share is $500. If the image is exclusive to Evolve, your share of a $1000 license would be $650.
  • Can I approve or reject any uses or put restrictions against certain uses on my images?
No. Evolve licenses images to a professional buyer network, for commercial and editorial uses. Any defamatory use or misuse of an image by an end user is contrary to our license agreement, and highly uncommon for within a seasoned buyer community. We find that restrictions impose an unnecessary barrier between a vetted buyer and the photographer.
  • Are there any uses you do not permit?
The following uses are not permitted:· Sub-license, sell, assign, convey or transfer any rights· Sell, license or distribute its final product in such a way that permits Licensee's end users to extract or access the Images as a stand-alone file.· Incorporate the Images into a logo, trademark or service mark.· Distribute, post or upload the Image(s) online in a downloadable format or enable it to be distributed as a stand-alone image file via mobile devices.· Use of any Image in a pornographic, defamatory, libelous or otherwise illegal manner, whether directly or in context or juxtaposition with other subject matter and materials.· Use any of the Images in any manner prohibited by any export laws, restrictions or regulations.· Licensee may not falsely represent, expressly or implicitly that Licensee is the original creator of a visual work that derives a substantial part of its artistic components from the Images.
  • What metadata (keywords, captions, etc.) do you require?
We support embedded metadata, so be sure that all image files submitted have sufficient metadata for our extraction via our media ingestion technology. Supported metadata fields and requirements may be found in our submission guidelines.
  • How will my images be distributed?
Evolve will distribute images through our e-commerce website http://www.evolveimages.com and license directly to image buyers.
  • What about sub-agents? What’s my share of sales then?
Evolve Images is not currently planning to distribute through sub-agents, as that would tend to be contrary to our vision of a limited, curated collection. However, we cannot rule out carefully-considered strategic partnerships in the future if an opportunity is beneficial to all parties. In such a case the royalties of 50% or 65% would be based on the amount that Evolve Images receives.
  • How soon will I get paid once an image is licensed?
Once payment is received, Evolve will send payment within two weeks.
  • How many images do you plan to have in the collection?
Our focus is on quality not quantity. We believe we can generate significant royalties to our Artists by strictly limiting our collection to only the the most creative and innovative images. Buyers have told us that they are overwhelmed with mediocrity and are tired of seeing the same or similar images distributed broadly across multiple re-sellers. Evolve will offer buyers a respite from the ordinary and will focus our efforts on showcasing only those images which are extra-ordinary. This guiding principle will lead us to build an image library that is numbered in the thousands not millions.
  • What is your image protection policy?
Image protection is a multi-tiered set of activities, policies and technologies that Evolve has deployed to protect our mutual interests:
    • Visible Watermarking: detail views of every image include a visible watermark “Evolveimages.com”.
    • Unwatermarked comps are only made available to registered users who must accept the end user licensing agreement before downloading.
    • Copyright information is embedded into every file download ensuring the correct attribution of ownership remains with the image file.
    • Every image that is distributed exclusively by Evolve is protected against unauthorized web use by a web trawling service.
    • Automated renewal notification: All licensees are contacted 30 days prior to the expiration of a license and provided with the option to renew and/or extend their current license agreement.
    • Enforcement: Under the supervision of our Chief Operations Officer, Evolve rigorously pursues enforcement of copyright and as needed will partner with outside counsel and our contributor community to ensure enforcement of copyright protection.
    • Reporting misuse or fraud: Contact enforcement@evolveimages.com
